5 Ideas To Make Your Website Less Girly, More Professional & Why

Every day I come across tons of websites (you would too especially if you’re on Bloglovin’) by women entrepreneurs and so many of them have one thing in common – the girly cuteness in their design. I personally pretty much hate the girly look. I like design that instantly connects with people across gender. And if you do a quick survey, you’ll find that a significant percentage of women don’t particularly like the cutesy look either, especially when it comes to websites that offer professional services, unless of course, your products are meant for teenage girls!

I recently made a list of 5 women designers (found on Pinterest) that have super girly sites. Then I asked a small group of people (men + women) to look at the sites and tell me what they thought. Moreover, to tell me whether or not they would approach those designers for their work. They said they thought the sites looked cute but made them think that the owners were not really serious about their profession, like it was a part-time gig.

If you’re in an industry where you are catering to female as well as male clients, you MUST design your website in a way that it will appeal to both instead of completely focusing on what colors or art work you like. For a lead generating website, your identity online must reflect confidence & professionalism – no matter how girly/sweet/cute you are in your personal life, Your clients may not really care to know that side of your personality. What they need to know if how well you can deliver the services you’re offering to them.Here’s a list of my 6 ideas to help avoid ending up with yet another ‘cute’ website.

1. Logo

Please for God’s sake, chuck that watercolor logo! Huge & cute font logos in the site header center with a watercolor splotch background are the first sign that you have a girly brand design. Not everyone likes watercolor as much as you do. Choose a font that makes a statement about your business, not one that’s just “Oh, so pretty”.

2. Baby Colors

Okay, I’m not saying you have to completely steer clear of any pastel, light, baby colors but restrict your web design palette to only one such color AND pair it with a second strong color like red, ink blue, green, black etc. Baby pink + sea green, baby pink + baby blue, sea blue + beige are extremely feminine & over used at that, so a definite no-no.

3. Fonts

Do NOT use cute fonts. There’s a difference between beautiful hand-written fonts and kiddish fonts. Choose your fonts wisely – they have a strong impact on whether or not your visitor trusts you with his/her work.

4. Illustrations

I understand you love flowers – but must you put them on your website? Do they have anything to do with what you offer? Think about what your website artwork is adding to the overall credibility of your business. Don’t just put them there because they make you feel good.

5. Images

I recently came across a web designer who’s got a hero image on her homepage that consists of an iPad, golden confetti, a lipstick and a pearl necklace. Other than the iPad, what do any of these things have to do with her web design skill?? Are her visitors here to check out her favorite shade of lipstick? Trust me, this has lately become more common than it ever should have.
